Cooling System

I am going to fit a GD supplied coolant expansion tank to my Dax Supertube. As with most Cobra's the main problem is finding a location as high as posible to fit it. I am thinking of fitting the tank to the chassis cross member in front of the engine. The location of it will mean the rad cap is below the the inlet manifold which I think may cause air lock problems.
Has any one had any problems fitting a tank in a similar position?

regards
Kevin

RE: Cooling System

That will be too low and you'll never get all of the air out.
Mine is mounted on the left hand side just in front of the bulkhead.

Mine too, as high as I could get it.

RE: Cooling System

Hi Kev,
I noticed you have tied all you spark leads together, does that not cause any problems with cross fire or whatever they call it?
thought I would as since I was just about to get some separators...

cheers Ben :tu

RE: Cooling System

Hi Ben well spotted.
That was just a temporary job to stop 'em getting burnt, I've now fitted separators.

RE: Cooling System

The AK supplied header tank fit in the same position as you describe and they say there are no problems. However, I agree with Kev that the vent point on the header tank should be above the highest water level in the engine/radiator. I'm not sure if all kits are the same for rad position - the top of mine is well below the water outlet point so I'm contemplating running a second vent line from the high point on the rad to the header tank.

RE: Cooling System

Hi Stan, not quite sure how you have managed to fit your Engine and Expansion tank, but if the tank is not above the level of the engine and radiator, you have done something wrong. The reason why this system has worked faultlessly in AK's is it is the highest point. :} Just put a spirit level on mine to check. :7 :7

RE: Cooling System

Hi Martin,
I have used standard SD1 engine mounts and I agree the rad is lower than the engine, however, the highest point on my set-up is the thermostat housing outlet to the top hose - mine is ally and I cut and welded it to give a "flatter" outlet - this is where my vent comes from. I havn't checked this (I will now!) but I'm fairly sure that if I take a level line from the vent point forward then there is not enough height to fit a forward mounted header tank under the bonnet. I purchased a Dax header tank - cheaper than AK! - and fitted it to the bulkhead - I'll post an image tonight, if I'm sober for long enough

RE: Cooling System

Hi Martin,
It explains a lot, I can tell thee!!!
Anyway, the attachment is not particularly clear but the the level is "level" from the top of the top hose to the front of the bonnet. To get the vent point on a front mounted header tank higher looks to be not possible as it would clash with the bonnet - as you have an set-up that works this may not be the case, but it looks very close.
