oil pump bolts

I have 2 oil pump bolts with knackered heads so cant use a spanner or sockect on them also they are a pig to get at with mole grips/etc.

I need to get them out so any ideas are welcome

I even tried to get in with a junior hacksaw to cut the heads off and then remove the studs once the pump is removed but cant get in with the hacksaw.

I am replacing the complete pump so I dont care if the old pump gets butchered, so all ideas/experiences welcomed

Dave

Re: oil pump bolts

Not sure if you've already tried it but can you get the hacksaw in from another angle to try and make a slot for a screwdriver?

Last resort I know of is to punch a dent in the top and take a big drill to the top and drill the heads off.

Good Luck.

Craig.

Hi Dave

If you have a welder, weld a nut to the head, i.e. in the centre, protect machined faces from splatter.

Re: oil pump bolts

Some tool stockists have special sockets designed to loosen rounded heads.
An alternative which I've used in the past is a small cold chisel. Use it at 90 degrees to the shank of the bolt with the cutting edge almost tangential to the rounded head. If you can get the angle right a few blows with a hammer can loosen quite stubborn fixings.

If you can't losen them with a chisel, drill the heads off. :thumb:

Re: oil pump bolts

Techniques i've used in the past include:

Cut a slot for a big screwdriver

Angle grind the head off

Drill the head off

Hammer a slightly smaller socket onto the bolt head

Re: oil pump bolts

thanks for all the tips.

got the bolts out and the new pump is in and running.

Before the new pump I had 30psi when cold, about 22 psi when hot and 15 psi on tickover

With the new pump I get 40psi on cold 30 psi when hot and around 24 psi on tickover

I still get overheating probs when engine under load so now suspect a dizzy timing problem

Re: oil pump bolts

have you tried a smaller diameter pulley wheel so your water pump is turning faster ie the vitesse one is a lot smaller than the standard sd1. Bill
