expansion tank

just like to know if any one has plumbed their cooling system up in the following way and if they found any problems---- I have a Ford Granada rad which only has top and bottom outlets, no small bleed off connection to run a header tank and I am thinking of intercepting the return from the heater matrix back to the water pump connection and fit the header tank in beween mounting on passenger bulhead just higher the the engine. I am using silicone hoses and before I waste an arm and a leg on joiners etc I would value anyones input on this idea.

I'm not sure which kit you're doing this on but my idiots answer is to get a new radiator with the necessary connections. A cop out I know...

Re: expansion tank

Stevey the rad is possibley okay, so you now need a header tank in-between the engine and the top hose to the rad. Making sure it is above all ther levels if possible. Other than that you get a header tank that feeds the top of the radiator which will require as said another type of radiator Osgood:angel:

Our granada cosworth rad, does not have a metal rad cap. instead it is of the pressureised type. There are 2 hoses to the radiator (both 32mm ish).

Re: expansion tank

thanks everyone for thoughts but I have got the rad now and purchasing another means another raid on "managements" purse and the traps hurt my fingers when I delve in the corners! Osgood, you have me thinking of maybe using the rad cap fitted with an adaptor directly into the top hose I have seen several cobras with that neat solution. Can anyone tell me where I can get one? oh and by the way the kit is a Euro 427

Re: expansion tank

I used staight pipe in the top hose and had a rad neck brazed into it. The rad cap seals and the overflow is led thorgh a pipe to the base of a none-presurized expansion tank. When the water cools it draws the displaced coolant back into the top hose keeping it nicely full.

My home-made expansion tank is actualy a stainless steel "tea caddy" from Wilkos - call me cheap if you want, but its nicely polished and saved me about £60 on a polished ally one!

I'll be at Harrogate if you want to take a look. Q plate blue Sumo with stipes.

Re: expansion tank

LOL had to laugh , that was how I made mine on my robin hood. Tea Caddy from Wilkos. Heat shield from old washing machine drum.

The Sumo will most likely get the same at some time.
