Help with Bolts for SD1

Hi

Trying to source some stainless steel or galvanised bolts for my SD1 V8 Rover but am having difficulties. They are the bolts that hold the water pump to the timing cover/block. Firstly there are five 36.5mm (1.25inch) long bolts in the water pump of which I am not sure of the thread size (help please?). Also there are two 5/16 x 5.5inch bolts, one 5/16 x 5.75inch bolt and one 5/16 x just less that 5inch bolt. The long ones I obviously know the size I just need to source new stainless steel or galvanised ones (which is proving very difficult), but I need help with the size of the 5 small ones please. Any recommendations for the long ones would be much appreciated. Most people just can't seem to do such long ones.

Thanks

Martin

Re: Help with Bolts for SD1

The threads will be UNC; you may struggle to get such specific lengths from general fastener suppliers. I don't think you want galvanised, maybe zinc plated?

You might be better off using studding and nylocs.
probably the easiest and cheapest option.

cheers

Thanks

Re: Help with Bolts for SD1

Not sure if its commonly used in general but I have used a similar tactic for some parts where there is not a long enough bolt readily available.

As long as you have the correct grade (8.8 equiv) and use a washer on each side it should be as strong, if not stronger, than a bolt of similar dimensions and specifications.

Studs are used a lot in flanged joints on pipe work and are the preferrred method rather than a bolt, as it gives more control on the stretch and hence sealing force on the jointing.

Also the stresses at the ends are lessened when using stud and nuts wrt Nut and Bolt. (the head of a bolt when tightened is subject to large stresses)

Re: Help with Bolts for SD1

Have you tried eBay? There are usually several companies selling stainless steel bolt kits for the RV8.

Re: Help with Bolts for SD1

In my experience the best supplier is "Aidpac" in Birmingham - don't have the phone number handy but he advertises in the popular magazines. Has all RV8 sizes and is knowlegible and helpful. Real Steel are a pain in the ar*s.
