Rover V8 Plumbing

Never thought I would say this but I got the engine started and running for 5 minutes today. All I need to do now is a little tidying up in the engine bay. However I need some more help. There are a few "plumbing " tasks which I need to sort out but do not know what to do or "plumb" them into. I have one open "pipe" on each of the rocker covers (Breather pipes). What do I do with these??? Secondly there is a smaller pipe at the rear of the engine block (drivers side) which points upwards. What do I do with this??. During the five minutes the engine was running there was a little waft of something coming out of all three "pipes". The engine is an old P6 unit.

Many thanks in advance

Regards

Denis

Re: Rover V8 Plumbing

No idea what the pipe on the block is, I've never seen one on any of the RV8's I've had.
Rocker breathers should vent into the air inlet, but I join mine together and run them into a catch tank, don't want gungy stuff going into my nice new heads now do I .

Kev

Re: Rover V8 Plumbing

The above plumbing is described in various threads on the forum. Basically it should be arranged so the crankcase pressure with oil vapours should vent to the carburettor after the air cleaner not through it and burnt in the engine. Clean replacement air should be drawn in through the other vent after filtration by the air cleaner. The result of this should create a slight vacuum in the crankcase. On an SD1 the larger piping goes to the carb body and the smaller to the air cleaner. Both pipes have suitable flame traps in them.

craigh,
It may be a crankcase breather but what do I do with it??

The rocker breathers. Where do I plumb these to? Do I need flame traps?? Do I need PCV'S ?

Re: Rover V8 Plumbing

I seem to remeber on my old Land Rover V8 the breathers, Breathed into the big air cleaner box on the top of the engine. The small pipe at the back of the engine was there, I think, to allow any oil that got into the air box via the breathers to drain back to the sump.

I am sure there was also a small connection somewhere for a vacuum take off to operete the gearbox diff lock.

I would just plug this pipe and ignore it. Later Range Rovers and SD1 engines do not have it.

Depending what carbs you have the breathers will either connect to each carb (SU or Stromberg carbs) or into the front of the carburettor on a Weber / Edelbrock carb.

When I fitted the Edelbrock carb to my Land Rover I connected one rocker cover to the port on the front of the carb and placed a small K&N style filter on the top of the other one. This causes air to be sucked in via the small filter through the engine and back to the front of the carb.

Craig.

Re: Rover V8 Plumbing

Denis

This picture may help a bit - you can see how the breather on the driver's side (European) has been plumbed in. Can't offer any technical advice unfortunately as I'm an engineer of the cheque book variety...

Cheers
Andy
