Sump cracked and so have I

Not an unfamiliar problem as I've seen from others!

A small crack appear with decent leak post yet another argument with an ******* sleeping policeman.

Not a complete mug so I'm going to jack her up and take off the sump. Can't see any big problems ahead and it looks like it will drop out easily. I've bought a replacement SDi sump off ebay. Looks good and for £25 nicker its worth a punt. One question - it comes with a windage tray. I believe it simply bolts onto the block direct. Does it ? - and does this compromise the cork gasket? Or do I leave it off? My track days are over so oil surge/low pressure unliley to be an issue. Thoughts guys? Don't mock an innocent!

PS If it adds to anyone's thinking I fitted Edelbrock chrome covers and adapter plates. I'd read mixed reviews re oil leaks but mine are fine. However, I did find the driver side cover was going to hit the pedal box/bulkhead. Rather than lump hammer a dent to ease it I cut off about 1/4inch ( stiil on old money ) from the lead edge on the cover and it fitted fine and still didn't leak either so - Result! - so now onto the sump!!

Cheers

Re: Sump cracked and so have I

As far as I am aware all RV8 sumps are interchangeable as the bolt holes and flange are identical, its only the main oil pan that varies in position.

Might as well leave the windage tray on - but just check that the crank doesn't foul it first, on a full revolution.

Re: Sump cracked and so have I

Many thanks chaps. The crank suggestion is good one. Decided not to worry about getting a lower profile pan as the bellhousing sits just as low anyway

This shows the sump etc http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/rimmer/sd1/v8/sump.
Hopefully you can tell from that if you have all the bits required.

Hi, send a bill to Edinburgh District Council for all your expenses. As far as I recall they no longer afford to have third party insurance for accidents and injuries and are currently replacing all slabbed pavements with tarmac. Apparently there have been so many claims they have to pay out from their own funds. I am sure if you damage your steering etc. from hitting a pothole they are liable, the same should apply to sleeping policemen, especially if there are no warning signs.
