Any idea if i have a ioil stat

Hi, Any ideas if i already have a oil stat??? im thinking of replacing the oil cooler hoses with some braided ones, and thinking of putting in a remote stat, but would hate to find out later it alreadt has one

One more Q Is there any do's or donts with fitting the new oil hoses, i.e. on start up, it should prime the system/oil cooler OK,

Chances are you'll have to re-prime the pump as the oil will have drained away by now.

You should definately prime the system before startup. The old method of a rod stuck in a drill to drive the pump works very well.

If your not sure how to do this just ask on the forum. (Sorry if sucking eggs springs into your mind!)

Pete

Re: Any idea if i have a ioil stat

Think i might just be looking at a way out of priming the pump ;-( I asked V8 Developments who built the engine (About 500 mls on it now) and they reckoned it should be ok as long as the front cover hasnt been off?, surly the oil drained off and the filter off isnt really much different to a normal oil change? only the oil that wants to come out will the oil that doest will stay in , hopfully in the pump? it was the new oil hoses that worried me more, i tried to get some oil into them, but it proved a tw--.

ay ideas with the stat appreciated

cheers

Oil stat - if present, then at about 90degrees to the connections for the pipes, on the sandwich plate itself, you will see a largish hexagon head, much like the one shown at the top of your picture which is above the sandwich plate, and which has a copper washer under it.

Can't actually tell from your picture, unfortunately.

That's what would worry me...that fact that the cooler and hoses will take a few seconds to prime and if your system is like mine that means no oil pressure.

At the end of the day why take the risk, it will take your at most an hour to fabricate the rod and carry out the work, you can sleep easy knowing that your bearings are OK.

Regards,

Pete

All that worries me is that the engine has just been set-up on the rollers, if i start playing with the distributor that will be another trip to them (I know its cheaper and a lot less hasle then replacing the bearings) looking at some of the threads on the other forums it seems that marking the distributor the timing will still be off?
1/ If i was to go for the start up, whats the max time i should be looking at before seeing oil pressure, i know at best they take a while to reg oil pressure after a oil change
2/ If i go for priming, is the priming tool available to buy, whats the views on ignition timing with taking the distributor off
3/ Ill have a look today to see if the sandwitch plate has the stat built in, surly if it has, it isnt going to have to prime the cooler/hoses on start up that will be later when the oil reaches temp???

Bring on the valium

Re: Any idea if i have a ioil stat

Steve - look at it this way - at least you are going to learn how to reset the ignition timing. A thing that will be of use to you for a very long time.

Restarting that engine without having primed the oil system should NOT be an option. However, it's your engine...............
