| "They have P38 (Range Rover?) rubber sump gaskets, but they cannot tell me if it will fit my SD1 or not. "
They claim to be RV8 specialists but they can't tell you that ? ? ? ?
No it's won't fit. The main block skirts and rear bearing area are identical but the front cover area is a totaly different shape on post 38A concentric oil pump engines. In fact, early 38A type engines didn't use a gasket at all, the sump was sealed using auto grade silicon sealant. Only the later aluminium sumped engines took they rubber gasket with built in load transfers (compression limiters) because the sump was used to stiffen the bellhousing to block joint, utilising the bottom half of the bell housing as well as the top to get a full circle of bolts.
I wouldn't bother with the cork gasket either.
I have built dozens of RV8s and never use a sump gasket at all. A silicon joint is perfectly acceptable. You must make sure the sump face is fairly flat though - the bolt holes will be dished where previous owners will have over torqued the bolts to try and stop leak cork gasket from leaking - knock them back with a ball pein (sp?) hammer.
If you really want a cork or rubber gasket (but they'll both leak after a while) then I'm pretty sure Real Steel have both.
