| oil pump priming I have followed previous advice regarding the oil pump priming of the RV8 before starting after a long lay up (pack pump -new pump gears- with vaseline, and spin the pump using a slotted rod on the end of an electric drill through the dissy drive hole) but the pump seems to turn only very slowly and with considerable resisitance, any ideas before I break something? Regards QK |

| Sounds to me as though it has done what it was supposed to do - you can burn a cheap drill out turning over the pump with a primingstick if you're not careful. If I were you, I would remove a rocker cover and check you have oil oozing out from the rocker shafts. I personally don't use, or like the idea of, the vaseline technique, as now you have to pump that thick stuff through your narrow oil galleries before any oil gets to the vitals. If you're using a stick then a squirt of clean oil in the pump when you re-assemble is enough with a bit of spin with a drill. In car, on the slow starter motor, then maybe there is some justification for a small amount of vaseleine or grease because under it's own power the engine will flush the oil galleries in no time. Anyway, remove a rocker and check you have flow. Russ |
