help required

Due to a mishap with a speed hump yesterday, i am the proud owner of a diff unit with two stripped threads. The threads in question are at the bottom front of a Granada diff and are M12, the obvious answer is to get them helicoiled but this seems an expensive way to sort them out. The other possibility is to drill and tap them to M14. Can anyone else suggest any other options?

You can drill & tap to a larger size, fit a mild steel bolt and cut flush, then drill & tap the new bolt to M12. This way you have retained the original size bolts. (Rather like a helicoil).
Whatever route you go down, keep a note of your expenses and sue the local authority for damages.

I assume you will need to remove the diff in order to repair it?

If you take it to a local engineering shop they should be able to helicoil it just as cheap as drilling and tapping it to the next size up.
M14 is not a common thread size and you will struggle to find bolts. M12 and M16 are the common threads. Unless you go to an imperial thread. 9/16 UNC or UNF which has a diameter of 14.3mm

An M12 recoil kit (same as helicoil) is £35, you get the drill th etap the fitting tool the coils, its easy to do.
Cromwell tools will sell the kit to you.
And it makes a proper job no bodged up drilled bolts etc, and you will be able to take the bolts out later without sh1tting your self.

You're joking aren't you Andy.
It's a Sumo, If it's raised any higher it will fall over in cross winds and people in Fiats will park underneath it.

Thanks for all the helpful and unhelpful posts. I decided to take the diff out and have it helicoiled. J. Eales developments are going to do it for me.
