Started her up this morning and it started to backfire, but only onthe nearside pipe. After a few minutes it went away. On my return home it started ok but felt a bit lumpy. Any clue's please, The distributor was set to 36* and the fuel was weakened three weeks ago.uptill today everything was fine. Its done 1500 miles to date. Regards Ray

Firstly, check the distributor hasn`t come loose and turned a little.
If that`s ok - I will let someone more knowledgeable advise further.

Two possible causes spring to mind. The most likely would be a Plug/s or lead/s breaking down on the sickly bank.Try pulling leads whilst it is misbehaving to ascertain which plug/lead is the problem. Or a header/head joint leak could make it Pop on one bank, But more likely it would only show up on overun.

Check for air leak on the exhaust, maybe tweak up the flage nuts.

Check the underside of the distributor cap, probably damp.

If it is not that, replace everything.

I was having a similar problem recently and a new distributor cap and rotor arm worked wonders. Boyze pointed out to me the tracking line on the rotor arm!
