Try checking the fuel filter as a place to start.

Or a fuel hose that is crushing itself under suction.

Hi,
This could also be an ignition problem.
What type of distributor have you got ?
Regards
Jim

Hi Will,
Mallory distributors normally have red caps.
An ignition problem can also causes the rev counter needle to bounce about when the fault is on.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say " but it also does this when running" .

Jim

Hi Jim

thanks for the reply i will check the distributor,it is like it is starved of fuel and almost jumps around when running around 2500rpm, it started this a few weeks ago and did it in 5th only but now seems to do it through all the gears ,also hard to start some times

thanks will

Hi Will,
If it's a Mallory dual point distributor that you've got , they can give problems with condensor breakdown. Check the rev counter needle when the problem occurs, and if it's bouncing around you've got ignition trouble.

Hi Jim

I replaced the condensator worked a treat, a couple of test drives and it is smooth to drive know, who would believe something so small could cause whiplash like that when driving.

Thanks for all your help
Will
