Unilite Distributor

Tonight worry has set in ahead of my first start up on Saturday.
So tonights worry....

I have a 383 sbc stoker that has a Unilite distributor. This has no vac advance. I have fitted standard coil and ballast resistor set up, no electronic ignition box thingy.

so engine builder says set static timing to 8degrees before tdc, he has done this and marked the distributor for me also.

However when i run it up how does the timing advance change at higher revs. daft question maybe but I am learning on the job here.

On the distributor instructions it says
'' distributors with numbers .....etc etc have 24 degrees of mechanical advance at 3000---3200 revs''

is this my answer. I can't see what would move in the distributor to change the advance ?

David

Under the plate with the trigger items on it, Out of sight will be a set of balance weights. As the distributor spins faster these will move outwards due to centrifugal force and advance the top plate round with it.

If you try turning the rotor arm clockwise it should move a bit then when released it should spring back into place. This is the mechanical advance working.

Craig.

Second thoughts.

The base plate will stay where it is and the rotor arm will advance in relation to the weights.

The base plate only moves on vacuum advance systems.
