Starter Motor - RV8

Hi Gents
Just want a quick bit of advice re a starter motor in the Real Steel Catalogue - Part No AZN17792. Listed as a Range Rover starter, compact mini type, new Bosche starter with solenoid.

Will this be OK for my 3.5 SD1 engine?

Thanks

Martin

Sorry can't help but try www.racemettleltd.co.uk great piece of kit and it can be fitted with the solenoid in any position so can be kept clear of header pipes!

Here is an E-Bay auction to the type fitted on my 4.6 Range Rover

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STARTER-MOTOR-...QQcmdZViewItem

Note that most, if not all Range Rover starters have the solenoid sticking straight out the side of the engine. Kind of 90 degrees to the engine block.

This will probably cause clearance issues between the chassis and the solenoid.

The SD1 starter has the solenoid sticking straight out the bottom so should give a bit more room.

Craig.

Martin,

Simple answer is, yes, it will fit. All RV8 starters are interchangable. You must watch out for the solenoid orientation noted by Craig though. Solenoid is fixed position. The Real Steel price isn't too bad either. It's not offset/geared like the (expensive) Racemettle unit but the 4.6 version should provide plenty enough torque to start any RV8. Make sure it's a 1.7KW 4.6 one though, early 4.0 ones (which look the same) are only 1.4KW (but still smaller, lighter and more powerful than std SD1).

Russ

Hi Russ

The starter in the Real Steal catalogue seems to have the solenoid on top, rather than on the side (like Craig suggested the Range Rover one is), or underneath as the original SD1 starter that I am replacing has. Is that going to be OK?? (putting the engine into a GD).

Thanks

Martin

Just for reference I have attached a couple of pictures of an oiley old SD1 starter on a nice shiney new 4.6 block.

As can be seen, the solenoid faces downwards.

If the real steel one looks similar to this then go for it.

Craig.

Martin

That looks exactly like the one fitted to mine.
I have the 3.5efi RR engine and it cranks it fine.
Solenoid upwards suits my setup better.

Got mine from a breakers and plenty of life in it still.

Cheers
