Finding my oil leaks

Now tracking down the three oil leaks on my newly started sbc.
I have curred the Niagara falls oil leak at the rocker cover, it turned out the bolts securing it were too long , were bottoming out in the hole and therefore I was not tightening down the rocker cover at all.

Then there was a small stream at the union where my oil pressure senders went, i now have a remote set up and it looks dry

My last oil leak appears a bit more tricky. It is sump gasket where the sump at the front meets the engine, a little either side of the crank, if that makes sense.
I note from the Vizard book it talks about this being a common place and lots of sealer suggested. Is there a suitable goup that I can put on the outside to stop this leak, at least while I continue to build and eventually SVA.

Hi David, Have just changed the front cover on my ZZ4 and although it has held its a problem area. Just as Visard suggests!!!!

You wont stop it I belive by smeering sealant on the out side, and its a right little s*d to fix. but you have nothing to loose! try a automotive silicon RTV
or its
Pulley off
damper off
front cover off
sump loosened and front studs removed
seal and refit

Good Luck
Clive

Rich, I have used the frost item before. It does work but only on areas that you have real good access to and then it's only a cover up fix anyway.
We used to use it on aircraft fuel panels (integral tanks) where the fuel would bleed past the closure panel 'o'srings. Our Boss stopped up using the stuff as it was too conveniant a tool to have on a Friday afternoon when wanting to get away early.......'yes fixed all them cover plate leaks boss'

David. Bearing in mind this is only just after "The First Startup" Have you nipped the sump bolts up? Most bolts need nipping up after they have been heat cycled a few times. (Header bolts, Rocker Cover bolts, Hose clamps and Sump bolts ) Just a thought before you rip the sump off and reseal it. As that is the ultimate answer. Should have bought a Ford The sump drops down without removing anything else

No need to remove anything from the chevy either. I'm fairly sure you just undo the sump bolts and it will drop off. I guess you have to remove the pulley and everthing else to get the timing cover off.

I had to tighten my sump bolts after a few miles as Chris said. It still leaks but a very small amount and mainly at the back. I just jack it up occasionally and clean it up.
I guess you have never owned a V8 Before. In my experience they all leak, Especially Range Rover ones!

Craig.
