Chevy V8 Crank

Here is my plan - i want to rebuild a chevy v8 350 but make it a 383. the book i have said get a 400 crank and grind it down to fit a 350 so i was on ebay seen a 400 crank and got it but havent got an engine yet. heres my question do i have to get a specific age or type of engine when i buy one or will it fit ant 350 once ground down?
thanks
matt

My advice would be to buy a brand new "ready to fit" 383 crank from the off. There is little difference in price from a new crank compared to a full re grind.

Hi,

I agree with Dave, dont mess about modifying cranks as firstly trying to find an engine shop in the UK that will do the mod will be difficult & secondly it will eventually work out more cost effective to buy a 383 stroker crank.

CHEVY V8 CRANK

Dear Claude, all agreed then, don't grind the 400 crank, most machine shops will charge a premium for grinding all that material off the mains. You will pay LESS for a new aftermarket crank and have a better piece. To answer your question, any 350 engine will take a 383 crank, but be prepared for some grinding to make the rods clear. You will also need 400 spec. damper and flywheel for balance. Or for an extra £25 or so go for an internal balance crank and use stock damper/flywheel Regards Mike
