Help with tuning my RV8

Does any one know of a good person to tune my RV8 that lives within a reasonable distance of Shepton Mallet in somerset.

My car is running ok, but needs an expert eye to look at it.

Sigma Engineering in Gillingham perhaps?
Unit 25 New Rd
Gillingham
Dorset
SP8 4JL
Tel: 01747 823270

I haven't used them myself but they do a lot of work on classic/vintage.

Another close by is

Autotechnics
Unit 21 Brickfields Business Pk
Gillingham
Dorset
SP8 4PX
Tel: 01747 824373

Let me know if you use them as it might be good for future reference as I'm only a few miles away from Gillingham.

If you can, try and get to a rolling road. This will enable a far more accurate set up.

Thanks for help.

I have managed to find a small company in Ditchet which is near Shepton Mallet, they are called NE Motors and have a rolling road. They are charging £110 for the first hour on the rolling road, then what ever labour is required after that to set the Webber 500 up, plus any parts. Seems quite good to me.

They should set up the analysis equipment first to get an idea of hydrocarbons, CO2 etc and set the carb accordingly. Given you don't have other issues, this should take about 10-15 minutes. Then they should do a power run for baseline, followed by multiple runs with increasing ignition advance until bhp peaks and/or pinking/detonation occurs. You will then have optimum settings. Don't worry about detonation as the rolling road control hold rpm in a way that is difficult to replicate in road conditions. Multiple power runs to set ignition should not take much more than an hour.

Make sure that they know what a webber 500 is, i.e. not a "normal" webber.

The only reason that I say this is that the 500 uses jets and needles at only fit the edelbrock/carter/webber carb.

If they don't have the needles and jets you can get a calibation kit for about 45 quid from Real Steel.

Alot of people will be interested to know what jets (primary and secondary) and needles you end up with. Of course you might not want to tell anyone as it has cost you money to find out.

Regards,

Pete

When I get these people to do the tuning, I will let everyone know the outcome and what jets and needles they use. I have no secrets.

Speak to Jim at JRV8. If you buy the calibration kit you end with rods and jets you don't need. If your 500 is out of the box ( or you don't know but there's no evidence that it was re rodded and jetted ) then its almost certainly wrong. If it hunts at low speed blows out soot on start up,and your plugs are sooty, its way too rich and you'll be losing power -10 to 15% maybe. You'll also bugger the plugs within 3000 miles. The standard 500 pumps too much fuel and not enough air. Jim would analyse your engine over the phone flog you the geasr for about £25 and you can do it all yourself in an hour. Don't waste you dough
