Ford big block

Guys just been to look at an engine, Ford 7.8 liter, origin is a Ford Lincoln.

I have heard and seen it running and sounds very sweet.

What sort of power is this beast putting out, I am told it is pretty standard other that decent headers, edelbrock manifold and carb.

Thanks Mike,

typo error should have read 7.5 he told me its a 460, most definatley edelbrock manifold and carb.

Motor is in a unfinished Dax at the moment that I am thinking of buying. I did have a quick look for engine numbers but all very tight in the engine bay and I do not have a clue where to look.

He says engine is from a 78 Lincoln

460

Dear Jeff, dont bother looking for numbers, all 460,s are low compression (8.1) smog versions of the 429. Max quoted HP was 212 with about 350 torque .Edelbrock bits & headers will add about 25 of each, Regards Mike

So the 7.3 litre engine puts out 237 bhp and 375 Torque.. about 32 BHP per litre after putting tuning bits on it.

Good grief !!

Cheers,

Tony

Helo Jeff... Mikes right mid 70's BB 460's are huge, & heavy low comp , low BHP gas guzzle'n lumps.../ engines....but they do make KILLER 550cid + stroker engines on the cheap!

Early 70's late 60's decent power
Available in Ford, Mercury and Lincoln.
460 same as 429, but with longer stroke. (3.85 inch)

During its earlier years, pre 1973, horsepower was rated at 365. After 1972 horsepower ranged from 208 to 275.

Regards Dr.Dee

460

Dear Jeff, the early, 69-70, 460 , which I dought if this is, had smaller chamber heads and more compression. Easy to check as they had rail rocker arms and screw in studs, just lift a valve cover. Later HP figures where a lot less as they where quoted net instead of gross due to a change in federal insurance requirements. Mike

Thanks guys, 212 hp not much more than my 3.5 rover, looks like I will have to consider if its worth it,

The Dax is complete right down to wheels, leather interior and carpets. I will need another 4 or 5 K to sort out a suitable engine and gearbox.

Looks like I will say no and upgrade my sumo, when I first drove it i thought the RV8was great but I am getting used to it now and need more power

Hi Jeff,

If you've got 4 to 5K to spend you could do worse than to speak to V8 Developments, You must be able to get 350-400 BHP out of a big CI RV8 lump for that sort of cash. You could then drop that into your Sumo, it would take quite along time to get used to that!
You could just buy a Chevy lump but that might need more work to transplant into your Sumo, the other thing is Chevy's are "common as muck". A really hot RV8 is a bit more of a "crowd puller" (Just costs more to build one!)

Either way you might need to upgrade the diff and gearbox!

All JMHO!

Pete

To get 350-400bhp out of a RV8 (naturally aspirated) you will need to go to at least 5.0L with a full Wildcat or similar top end. This will cost £7-8K. I've spent about £5k for 300-320. If I had my time again? For 408 stroker or similar.
