Unhappy tightening the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt.

Hi

I had a real job getting the Crankshaft pulley bolt off my Rover engine when I took the engine apart, now I can't tighten it enough putting it back on!!! The manual says 190-217NM which is dam tight!! When I try to tighten it I turn the engine. Didn't know if I jammed something in the flywheel I may damage something putting that much pressur on it? I have the clutch on but can take it off if necessary. Any suggestions or experiences would be gratefully recieved.

Cheers

Martin

Couple of options.
Wait until the engine gets in the car and put it in gear and get someone to press the brake pedal down. This should stop the whole lot moving as you tighten it.

More difficult if you have an auto box.

The rover recommended way was to lock the fly wheel using something like a short piece of angle steel in the teeth of the starter ring.

Really tight!!

Whatever you do, make sure it's really, really bl***y tight.

Mine wasn't and over time it fretted back and forth and widened the keyway, making the pulley scrap. As it is a P6, a replacement pulley was hard to find.

It also picked up on the crank and when I came to fit a new pulley, I had to file the deposited metal off to get the new one on. Luckily the crank is harder than the deposited metal and the process was fairly easy.

There you go.

I suggest waiting until the wheels are on and nipping it up against the hand brake, just don't forget to do it.

Hi guy's,
Sorry I interrupt this Rover thread but reading about the torque at the crankshaft damper bolt amount of torque mentioned above 190-217Nm that is a lot, I did check my Chevy specs and say that a torque of 63 Ft-lbs = 85Nm should be applied.
Now I get nervous, is the 85Nm correct? I did found that information on the net and like I say it is for a Chevy.
Please let me know if this is correct.
Regards,
Cobra289
