Old Starter Motor

Hi

I have a starter motor that came with my Rover 3.5. Is there any way of checking that its worth keeping (other than trying in which I am not at that stage yet)? Don't want to waste money on a new starter if this one is OK. The other thing is that its the original Sd1 motor with the solonoid underneath as opposed to the Range Rover type that sticks out at 90 degrees and may cause a space issue.

Thanks

Martin

Don't get rid of it whatever you do! SD1 motors with the bottom mounted solenoid are very useful.

You can check the motor with a a set of jump leads on a battery. Connect the negative lead to the casing of the motor and tough the positive one on the small braided lead that runs from the solenoid to the back of the starter motor.
Stand on the motor or else it will spin round on the floor!

This checks the motor but not the solenoid. You will need to check the wiring diagram to see what connections operate the solenoid. (I can't remember at the moment without looking at it)

Craig.
