Chevy 454 Sump depth!

Now that the Dax is back on it's wheels with it's motor fitted I have got a ground clearance issue. The sump clears the ground by 2 inches but the front ride hight is still 2.5-3 inches high. Have found a Moroso sump 6qt that is 8 inch deep which will give 2 inches more clearance than I have now. Is anyone aware of a sump pan that is shorter than this? Motor is a 1973 Chevy 454 big block. That makes it a mk IV pre 90.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Ian,
Moroso do one @ 7 3/4 and Milodon list one @ 7 1/4 but we have had one of these back ordered from the factory for over 3 months ( the Moroso # is in stock) Everything else is 8 inch.

Ian. Maybe a stupid question! But can you not gain any height by raising the lump on the mountings? I managed another 1" on the Cleveland without fouling the bonnet.

sumps

and beware of only raising the sump , if you still have the bellhousing/flywheel as the next likely target...
safer to add a thick sump protector plate and raise the WHOLE engine and box a little more

Thanks guys. At least I'm not looking for the Holy Grail here.

Chris. Raising the motor had crossed my mind. My mounts were fitted using the Dax factory jig which positions the engine such that it is not square to anything, not level left to right or back to front. The o/s foot well will need to be made again and the headers remade as they will foul the lower steering shaft. Bit of a bummer.

Neil. The trusty angle grinder was to be pressed into service to cut the bottom lip from my bell housing. As for a sump guard or deflector plate, I'll look into that. Could mean loosing the extra clearance I have gained.

hi ian,
a piece of 1/4" plate buys a big amount of 'peace of mind' though...

Can you not fit (or modify existing) either a 'winged' or dual sump. ??

I modded mine to a dual due to clearance issues and reinforced it at the same time.

Hi Gareth
Sump is from a truck. About 10"!! A bit bashed but could be modded. I would need to get someone to do it for me as my welding isn't good enough. Cheaper to buy a new one.
