1st Start up issues

I started up the cob earlier, 1st time since the body on etc and there are a couple of things that are faulty.
The alternator charge light is on all the time, I have checked and double checked the wiring, plus the alternator has been checked over too... what is going on?? I am thinking the battery could be at fault because once turned over for the 7th time it is flat again.
The second is the engine when running, it only runs for about 6 secs then cuts out. The sound is heavenly and the smoothness is spot on but why does it cut out? i thought it might be the regulator but I thought you folks should be more helpful on any given subject.

I would check to confirm the fuel pump is running after the engine has started. Does it run through an oil pressure switch cut out?

Craig.

Is it possible the feed for the fuel pump comes from the starter circuit instead of ignition circuit, by mistake?

Just a thought.

Just ran it and the same happened, but when it stalled the pump was still working so I am under the assumption it does work when running plus it does run when the oil pressure switch is out.

I wired up the pump as it shows on the colour coded wiring diagrams, besides it ran before. I can see your point though

I know of at least two RV8 sumos where the charge light stays on if you fire up the motor but don't take the revs over about 2k rpm. Once the light goes out it will stay out even at tickover.

I guess the alternator just needs to be spun quick enough to get the thing working.

Whilst the light is on the battery definately is not being charged, once the light is out my battery has 14.5v across it at tickover.

Can't help with your injection issue.....oh wait, stick a carb on it! (Sorry, couldn't resist!)

HTH,

Pete

LOL Pete, thanks but I just need to get it running enough to rev higher, seriously thinking of getting a new battery because I am now fed up with this charging lark now.
I am sure the battery as died due to lack of use.. 2yrs at least!

Hi Stu, The ignition lamp needs a 12v feed from the alternator and a 12v supply to the lamp, when not running the alternator feed is grounded thus the lamp is lit, when running the feed changes to +12v therefore causing lamp to go out. When sorting out the wiring on my pre-owned sumo i found that the feed from the alternater had been wired incorrectly. Secondly have you checked the fuel filter this will need to be changed frequently as the sumo tank seems to quite dirty, just a thought. Hope this helps.

Gary,

No problems!!! only solutions!!
