Cleveland engine

can anyone tell me how desirable is a cleveland engine ?

what sizes can you get them in (what are the numbers) ? ie 302,427,what

how can you tell it's a cleveland (8 screws on rocker cover--is this right)

are they still available new ?

how much should one be worth if available (new in box) ?

the reason I'm asking is a friend of a friend has something new in a box and thinks it's a cleveland 457 and wishes to rid himself of it ( I havn't seen it yet)

any help would be appreciated as I don't what to buy a load of rubbish
Regards Pete

Nice engine (i'm biased) Not such a range of tuning goodies available

351ci was the norm, but also a 302ci version from Oz

8 rocker cover studs. Thermostat housing in extended front of block

are they still available new ?
Only made between 1969-1973 (Oz version untill early 80s) So unlikely

how much should one be worth if available (new in box) ?
See above

More info or pictures would help

No such thing as a Cleveland "457" - it will be interesting to see what this engine really is!

Not a displacement I recognise for any other engine, either.

Pics/more info please.

Lets see some pics chap!!

Heres a 351ci Cleveland with aussie block (disregard poseurs 427 sticker LOL)

You can clearly see the 8 rocker box fixings, and note how the casting around the distributor is different compared to a Windsor block.

The front timing cover is quite unique as well but no pics of that at the moment.

The aussie 302 block and USA 351C block are interchangeable, same bores, same deck height; although the aussie block is thicker around the sump area, but that means you can build a very nice 351C with an aussie 351C block (only the crank and rods differ shorter stroke crank, with longer rods on the 302)

If your friends motor is a 457 that means its not going to be a Cleveland, not many get stroked over 408, and 393 is the combination that the best known Cleveland tuners stateside and in oz look on as practical maximum/ideal. There are more tuning parts around than many think, but australia is the place; but Chris is right in that there are less than for say a 302 or 351 windsor, and you cant buy aftermarket heads quite as cheap as you can for small block windsors and chevs!!!
