Rover efi to carbs conversion

Hi all, i picked up my rover 3.9 engine last weekend that came out of a metro....dont ask...
Anyway its efi and im not sure if i really like it that way so my questions are...
What do i need to do to convert it to normally aspirated.
What bits do i need to get.
What carb or carbs do i need.
Anything else you can think of??
Cheers guys.
Simon.

Assuming that the ignition is totally separate from the EFI (which I think it is) then the simplest method would be to go with an Edelbrock performer manifold and an Edelbrock 500 carb. You will also need a suitable fuel pump. I run a low pressure pump so avoid having to mess about with fuel regulators.

I've seen the above stuff come up on fleabay now and again. If you can't wait that long JRV8 or BAE or Realsteel could supply the bits. (Infact there is a new version of the 500 carb that has more control over the secondaries, I'd go for that if possible).

If your car has not been SVA'd yet then you will have problems getting an EFI block through the emissions with a carb.

HTH,

Pete

There's a kit on ebay just now that has all the bits you require excluding the fuel pump:

Rover V8 Edelbrock 500 Carb, Intake & Air Cleaner Kit on eBay, also, Rover MGF, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 17-Mar-08 16:12:57 GMT)

I don't know much about the SVA but I believe that you have to prove the age of the block, after a certain date the engine has to comply with certain emission levels. (It might not even be allowed to use a carb regardless of how well it is setup).

Things can get really bad if the block is very new as you will be forced to run CATS

People do use the EFI setup and manage to get it working in a cob so it might be worth looking into that. I would not fancy having to stick CATS on it though!

Pete

Before you scrap the engine, determine its age. I found out the year of manufacture of my (previous RV by contacting Rover Heritage. They where able to tell me over the phone that it was an engine from a 1978 SD1. Get in touch with them and then work out what emmision laws aply to your engine, armed with this knowledge I'm sure one of the club members will be able to advice you on carbs 'v' efi.

Right - I'm off to try refitting my clutch.

As it's a 3.9 litre engine that means it will be post 1990. If it's and early one you might be OK with the emissions but later models will need the Cats and EFI.

Fit a 3.5 engine to start with. They can be brought for a couple of hundred quid from E-bay.

Craig.
