Slightly rough running.

Hi All

Seeing as it was such a nice evening I decided to take the car out and fill it up with fuel. Journey there was uneventful and I'm glad to say the car still has the potential to scare me!

On the way back however, I decided to go home the long way and about 1 mile from home the engine started running quite rough. It would tick over and run to about 2000 revs fine, but above that it and when under load it hesitated and popped through the exhausts. Made it home OK at reduced revs.

The same type of thing happened in the summer last year when it stopped on me. I wiggled a few connectors on the distributor and it started and ran fine after that. I replaced the connections on the distributor for the proper plugs and didn't think anymore about it.

Any ideas, HEI coil breaking down with heat, Carb icing, Fuel mixture being temperamental?

Chevy 350 with Edelbrock performer RPM package and standard HEI distributor.

Cheers

Craig.

Quite possible I guess. It looked a nice evening but it was cold once going.

I pulled the air cleaner off as soon as I got home but couldn't see anything wrong. I guess once the engine is turned off any ice will melt instantly due to the heat coming back up through the manifold.

I will try it again some time and see if I have any more problems.

Cheers

Craig.

Another good point Wilf.

I haven't used the car for a while so will give it a look over tomorrow night.

I'm more and more tempted to get an EFI kit for it though. I guess these don't suffer from icing?

I know EFI has been considered "gay" but I already have a Dax with a Chevy and cream leather interior. If it's going to be gay, It may as well be 100% Gay!

Craig.
Yes they do, unless it has a water heated throttle body.

Very unlikely but it might be bad fuel. Water contaminated perhaps.

Is there a condenser on your car?

No Condenser.

All in one HEI Distributor with electronic ignition and the coil mounted in the top of the distributor cap.

Might change the fuel filter as that hasn't been done for a while and the problem appeared after I had filled the tank up.

Tempted to get an MSD distributor cap and coil as the one on there looks completely standard.

Cheers

Craig.

hei and heat

hi craig,
i'd be suprised if you have heat issues with a hei...unless the amplifier was installed without the correct heat conducting paste underneath it..(?)
- i ran my 77 'vette for two years in the saudi heat without any heat issues...
@50+ degrees C
whilst out there i did pop in a new amp module and leads, plugs etc but that was just because they were cheap..ha ha
seems too much of a coincidence you'd just refuelled..
(plugs and leads would be another matter though)as these would be more likely to missfire if you open her up as pposed to ticking over and 'missing' ,
(more to do with seeing the actual comp. ratio dynamic as opposed to just static ??)
but again unless they were all contaminated or fouled not really too likely.
could have been condensation in the tank of couse and the refill stirred it up??
hope you get to the bottom of it though
neil
