Ford V8 but what gearbox ??

Hi there I'm after advice......

I intend to put a Ford 302 or 351 in my Pilgrim which is running Granada Scorpio diff and looking to source a manual gearbox

Unfortunately I'm hearing mixed messages i.e don't fit a 4 speed box as the car will appear to be running out of steam i.e on motorways, it must be a T5 or Tremec.

Then theres the ah... just change the ratios in the diff and you can put in a 4 speed.

Has anyone any experience or can point out what are the ways to ensure the motor, gearbox and diff all work in harmony to ensure a good rev range and driveability.

I am trying to a source a cost efficient means to do this so please no put in a £2.5k gearbox as thats the easy way if I had the funds !

Thanks in anticipation.

Sideways.

Stick in a Getrag gearbox really smooth and relatively easy to get hold of. AK will do you an adapter kit. As for the diff ratio I believe there is one about 3.6-1 which would do most of the jag kits using this setup run a diff with a ratio of either 3.31 or 3.54-1 The 3.31 is more for cruising and the 3.54 is more for acceleration but either is good. Hi Tinka,

Can I ask more advice please...I should collect a 302 V8 next week and have sourced a Getrag gearbox. Now need a clutch, flywheel, clutch fork and bell housing.

I have seen you comment that there are two bellhouse sizes...any ideas what I should source to ensure a fit to a Getrag through thr AK adapter unit ??
Thanks,

Sideways.

Hi,

I've got a Ford 302 and have just fitted a Getrag gearbox.
I believe you can get the clutch and pressure plate from Real Steel and maybe the fork and release bearing too.

The bellhousing is related to your flywheel. There is a 157 tooth and a 164 tooth flywheel. Get the wrong pair (as I did) and your starter won't engage the flywheel (or possibly worse!). My original setup had a 157 tooth flywheel on a bellhousing suited for a 164 tooth flywheel.

Just be cautious (check exactly what you are buying) as you purchase your parts and you'll be fine.

Cheers...

I think Iain has covered most of it. I have a bell housing for sale that is for the 164 tooth flywheel, AK will sell you an adapter kit with all you need in it. You would need to get a clutch fork though as I don't have one of those but Reel Steel sell them now. If you do go this way and want my bell housing let me know, but a phone call to AK and they will tell you all you need to know, they are a really friendly bunch at AK.
