Have a look at the attached Excel model - I built this after igesting the Vizard books as well.

The CR sheet is modeled on my 383 - CR at 10.2 so same as yours.
I've loaded your specs into the Cam sheet - your overlap is only 11 degrees - very small, very mild (try mine at 270/276/110/Avd 4)

The DR sheet then calculates the Dynamic CR based on your engine and Cam specs.
Your DR is very high at 9.5 (put my specs in and you'll get 8.21) - I was looking to get about 8.5 on Vizards advise.

Hope this helps

James

I haven't the first idea how you make Excel do that! thanks James, really appreciate the help.

I gave you durations at 0.05 lift. At 0.06 which I think is what you've used they are 270/280. This is giving 59 degrees overlap which sounds about right. Feeding in the exact data I have on chamber size/deck clearance etc the dynamic ratio comes out at 8.2:1 so I'll stop worrying now!

Sounds like my engine is fairly similar specs to yours. You've obviously gone into this in some detail. Have you guesstimated what sort of power it should produce? I was hoping for about 400hp but trying to keep the low down power decent as well.

Thanks again for the help

Lloyd

Glad it helped - it was an interesting exercise to build.

I was aiming at 400 - 450hp with my 383 in order to hit a solid 400. Any more will be a waste as it'll scare me too much.
My other aim was for smooth delivery of the power and low rev controlability.
To support that I'm going down the EFI route with a Megasquirt system. Its been a lot of fun to build - I finished off the engine wiring loom last weekend (lots of wires and I wanted a very clean install so it took some time).
When I get a chance I'll post a picture.

What are you looking to put your engine into? How far ahead is the rest of the build?

I'm based out of Geneve, Switzerland so getting parts has been a bit challenging, that plus I've only just been able to rent a garage, has slowed me down a bit.

I've a Dax DD chassis on stands, a pile of Jag bits that need painting and am now saving up for the special suspension items.

and I thought it was a pain going to Harlow from where I live on the Welsh borders! How are you going to cope with the speeding laws in Switzerland once its finished?!!

I have a feeling a solid 400bhp is going to do a fairly good job of scaring me. I've stuck with a carbed setup so we'll see how that works.

Mines a Dax de dion also. There's loads of pics in my gallery at the moment as a Swedish friend is thinking of building one. I guess its over half way there now. The plan is to try to get it SVA'ed this side of Xmas, leaving the months before spring arrives to get it painted and maybe add some SVA unfriendly parts!

Wish you luck - there's no way I'm going to get mine done this year - I'll have to wait and see what the impact is next Feb of these new IVA rules as opposed to the SVA.

Off to veiw your gallery.

Drop me a PM if you have any more questions on the engine build.
