Ford 302 flywheel query

Hi there,

I have a Ford 302 motor from a Mercury Monarch 1978 which has a 6 bolt bellhousing fitment.

Any one out there know what flywheel tooth size I need to source ?? As soon as I know this I am on the lookout for the following: a flywheel, bellhousing, clutch and actuating fork.

Can anyone advise and also have any of the spares I'm chasing.

The reason being I am hooking this up to a Getrag gearbox.

Thanks,

David.

David,
164 or 157 tooth flywheels will do but you need to match the bellhousing to the flywheel or the starter wont work. You also need a block plate to locate the starter and this has to match the bellhousing. I have both flywheels.

I also have the starter which came with the engine, hence if I can establish which flywheel was standard fitment I can then source a flywheel and bell housing to match.

I'm wondering where to look ask the question at the moment, may be in touch ref flywheels ??

Thanks David.

Sorry, there are two differant starters, manual and auto for yours and they dont interchange. However if you get a later type manual flywheel your auto starter WILL fit.
As I said earlier, both size flywheels will fit yours so long as you get the bellhousing to match. Get these bits sorted first, then worry about the starter, thats the easy bit.

The smaller 157 Tooth Flywheel is common on earlier 65/8 Mustangs, Cougars, etc and take a 10" or 10.5" Clutch were as the Larger 164 Tooth Flywheel is common with 69 and later Mustangs, Cougars, Falcons and will take a 11" Clutch.

There are also two balance weights used, early engines(most Common)28oz and the later Model Windsors with the 50oz balance.

Wink reply

hi sideways,i would personally fit the smaller 157 tooth fly wheel which would need to have the 28 oz weight for the year of your engine, accepting the 10.5 inch diaphagm clutch creating a lighter clutch over the three fingered type clutch found on the 164tooth wheel.the 164tooth bellhousing is quite a bit wider and fitting may be a problem kev
