Question Ford 302 engine number.

Does anyone know where Ford put the engine ID number on a '72 302? I know where the casting number is its the unique engine ID number Im after.

Next question then is do I need it for SVA / DVLA use and if I dont have one where should it be stamped?

Cheers

Hi Andy,
I stamped a new number for my 302 engine onto the block behind the inlet manifold (There is a machined face about 1" high). This didn't present any problems for either SVA or DVLA and it is clearly visible. Also I had a letter from my engine supplier confirming date of manufacture.

Original number would be on a small ally tag under a carb retaining nut. Very unlikely to still be there.

Stamped mine onto the rear of a cyl head. 15 digit number, mixture of letters and numbers. Or where Clive said, no problem.

Thanks Guys,

Wilf, ye that is long done as I didnt get the intake or carb with the engine. Does it have to be a 15 digit number or can it be less? There is a 5 or 6 digit number already stamped on that flat face at the rear of the valley.

Maybe I should use that number and add a few to it, what do you think?

Cheers

I don't really think it matters. Only the chassis number has to have a minimum number of digits. I just tried to follow a known sequence of Ford engine numbers............

As you already have a 5/6 digit number stamped on the block. There is a 99.9% chance that that IS the engine #
