SBC oil filter?

I'm going to do the first oil change on my car this week and I'm after advice on which oil filter to get and where from. It's an '86 block single piece rear seal 383 stroker. Which makes, model of filter are best for normal street use, also can I get them from a local motor factor or is it a real steel job?

There was a big debate about Fram filters a while ago.

Hi ya,

After that debate about Fram I went and bought K&N filters from Summit. They have a hex welded on the bottom of the filter, so you can fasten and undo the filter with a spanner.
I have only just rebuild my engine, but the oil looks cleaner allready. (may be it's just my imagination???)

Regards,

Marc

I use the Moroso Racing filters now.

Moroso filter

22459 is the short Chevy one and Real steel sell them as do Summit from the states. I normally add one or two to every Summit order I do as they are a lot cheaper over there.

They don't filter quite as fine as some but they do allow a higher flow rate that has put the oil pressure up a bit. If you do regular oil changes you should have no problems.

Craig.

I have more info on the subject than I had before but somehow I'm more confused.

In summary - Fram are crap - avoid, K&N get a thumbs up as do Moroso (don't need higher oil pressure though).

In my simplistic mind I was hoping at least one thing on the cobra could be sourced locally from a factor without having to do mail order. However I don't want to buy substandard bits obviously.

I think the filter supplied buy the engine builder was an AC Delco - any thoughts?

I think the argument for Moroso ones was, that as they have a higher flow rate they are less likely to get blocked and allow the bypass valve to open.

I think I read somewhere that a cold filter with cold, thick oil will not filter at all as the restriction is too high. It simply opens the bypass valve instead and allows the oil to be pumped around the engine without being filtered.
The only way to increase flow rates is to have bigger holes in the filter or increase the surface area of the filter itself.

I think Re-power are now supplying AC-Delco and when I brought my engine from them, I was supplied a Fram filter.

An oil filter is a fairly essential bit of kit for an engine you have spent thousands of pounds on. Mail order a couple of K&N's or Moroso from real steel anjd your have them by the weekend.

What do you call "Regular" oil changes?

Once a year I do mine which equates to about 2000 miles maximum!

I normally change at the beginning of the season to clean out any moisture that might have formed over the winter.

Seems a shame to dump the oil really.
