Engine surging

OK I picked up a supposed 'rebuilt' RV8 on Friday and spent the weekend fitting it into my Kitcar. Rebuilt by someone who ended up giving up on their kitcar but finished the engine.
Heres what I've now got.
3.5 RV8. 38A engine number. AFAIK its standard spec.
Edelbrock 1404 carb on Offy JWR Twin Port manifold.
Carb was bought used from the US and I dont know what Rods/springs are in it as yet.
DLM8 dizzy. Intermotor Ignition Module.
Standard new Coil. New Plugs
Facet petrol pump.

Setting No I piston at TDC, rotor arm pointing at approx position of No 1 Plug lead when crank pointer is to around 8 degrees.
Bunged all the above together and jury rigged an ignition system.
Touched power to the starter and she fires instantly !. Rough but she fires.
However, there is a sort of surging where all 8 will fire then it seems to miss for 8 then will all fire again. Tried rotating dizzy 180 degress but very bad missfire, so return it back.
Now and again it will run solid for 7 -8 seconds then revert back ro surging

I suspect the carb or the fuel pump. There is no pressure regulator between the pump to the carb so that could be causing a problem, but Im not sure.
Anyone had a similar problem?
Cheers

Which Facet Pump? You need at least a Red Top with an RV8 and a FilterKing regulator. The Square Solid State ones are not up to it. Although I doubt it would show up Off Load.

I ran the Red top pump on my 3.5 Rover powered Land Rover and it ran fine.

The Edelbrock carb out the box is calibrated rather rich so you may need to buy the calibration kit and lean it off a bit. At tick over you could try adjusting the mixture screws on the front to see if it helps.

You need a regulator with that pump as it pumps at 7psi which your edelbrock carb only needs 4 psi.
