Chevy crank.

Even though my pig of a Dax isn't running, due to the sudden availability of parts, plane 'B' appears to have kicked in.

So my question is for you engine experts:
How many horses would my std nodular iron crank put up with before it gets all bitter and twisted and spits it's dummy out?

Thanks

Ian.

Well the stock crank in my 350 was apparently handling 300hp for 20 years in a boat so I would have thought that envelope can be pushed a fair bit.

According to that Jim Richardson fellow the stock cast crank if its balanced along with the rest of the rotating assembly will happily handle pretty much whatever you can throw at it normally aspirated.

Scat stroker cranks are peanuts though, so why bother with the stock one ?

RPM Machine - Product » 1-91050-1 Chevy 350 to a 383 Stroker Kit...

Cheers Vidge, but mine is an externally balanced 454 monster. Totally different ball game to the 350s and strokers.

The engine has been built and balanced but with some general duty oval port heads. ( cock-up by builder who went bust.................long story and over it now, I think)

I am in line for the parts I originally requested and a few others so was just trying to get some idea as to where to draw the line before needed to get the lump back out and proceeding to the point of bankruptcy!

in case anyone uses the link posted though, I bought my Scat crank from Daymon at RPM machine. Lovely bloke, nightmare service! Perhaps others have had better luck

No worries. Have crane and a very full engine bay.

Slooger,I don't think the power will brake the crank,it's the RPM. Buy some decent ARP bolts and Studs and you could also get a nice fillet ground in the crank and use chamfered bearings, this stops it cracking at the journal. Those are the mods I used to do with Mini cranks. Rods are weak too, you can get Scat rods cheap and fit ARP rod bolts. I run my stock crank to 6500rpm, also make sure you have a steel flywheel.

Do you need parts??

Ta Jock Juice! Not up for any parts yet and I was trying to avoid taking the lump back out due to space issues as well as trying to get some miles on it first.

A mate of mine has another motor, 502, and was thinking about getting that one sorted and swapping them over.............or do I get the thing painted??!!

You have a point Andi, but then maybe that is what I need!

A Drag racing mate has also pointed out that Chevy Performance also produced the 572................ouch. What a motor! The Dax would possibly fold in half.

Found this on Youtube of an Impala with a 572. Enjoy.
