[quote=ian_uk1975;249282] 3/8" sockets ARE proper tools last time I looked. I also have 1/2", but don't have 1/2" drive imperial sockets (something I've been meaning to address with an imperial 1/2" socket rail). I must be Superman, cuz I CAN turn the engine over with the 3/8 wrench (but it ain't easy).

Hehe yep and thats why you'll skin your knuckles eventually, because you'll put so much force onto a puny 3/8 ratchet that it will slip or break (even a snap-on one) and you will at best skin your knuckles and probably bang your head hard as well (I know I did it when I was a callow youf-ouch) pay to learn and all that!!

You can get a good quality rail of AF sockets from a lot of places, and powerbar to make life easier. By the way if the std chevy damper bolts are that weak Id get an unbrako cap head and a big thick washer instead; you wont break that (or a ford damper bolt...)

Hope your on the road soon

Steve

I replaced my damper bolt with one of these made it so much easier to turn over by hand.

Yea, the 3/8" ratchet I'm being forced to use is far from ideal. Will definitely be investing in some 1/2" drive AF sockets very soon.

Cheers,
Ian.

Really? I missed the bit where Clarkson said sorry for his sarcastic response. But really, let's not get into any pissing contests, it's quite childish and I'd rather keep things sensible, 'personalities' aside. Thanks.

Not been sarcastic at all??

Only trying to help you my friend as I could not understand why your turning over a V8 engine with a 3/8 drive ratchet!! I have been working in the Motor trade for 18 years, so I should know!

I'll let you get on with it!

Saying 'why don't you get some proper tools' isn't the best way of imparting advice!

You're been working in the trade for 18 years and you're very accustomed to working on V8s. This, however, is the first V8 I've done any real work on. My previous experience (in terms of top-end tear-downs) have all been with 4-pot engines, so I have no real frame of reference.

What may seem obvious to you, isn't to me, hence the reason for this thread.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond, but I just took the 'proper tools' comment as a bit out of hand. You probably thought I was being a bit of a numpty, but years ago when you first started, you were probably in the same boat!

Cheers,
Ian.

Ok I'm sorry, should have written why don't you use the correct tools.

Seems to me that those who need the advice and experience of others might put up with a little rough handling from the aforesaid experienced others if they want their advice for free.

Sorry Ian, sometimes it seems as though we are being taken for granted - if you want our knowledge, be prepared to put up with our "little ways" as well. It is not as if we are particularly difficult, nor offensive. If you can't do that, then I for one will help you no further. Can't speak for others, just how I feel.

You are the one that needs us, not the other way around. You are quite right, you don't want to get into a pissing contest - not while you need us it seems. Once you have solved your problem, how often will we see you contributing here and helping others?

Andi m8, get a real size motor and use big tools for the job. No silly little bolts here. I turn mine with the inlet blanked and the outlets tapped. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Going to get bloody arms like Popeye.

Where's that tin of spinage?!!
