We all got on the already late plane and the Pilot (in an Irish accent) says there was some damage to one of the main tyres and they are inspecting it. 20 minutes later he said we were going to change the tye but they had pulled a nail out of it and it hasn't gone down yet so were going to give it a go!
Got us home just fine though.

Bet you were all clenching on landing!!!!!!!

Ha, I bet a few people were.

Luckily I know a little bit about planes and a burst tyre doesn't usually cause too many problems.

Fraz, are they removed from the head? They need to be to do a proper job. I use a wire wheel on the bench grinder to clean them up. Make sure you keep them in order of removal if you're only cleaning up and re-lapping. A drill with a wire wheel attachment will achieve the same results.

I did a set last week but as there was a quite a lot of pitting on the valve faces I had to re-face each valve. Don't forget to check runout and guide wear whilst it's apart.

Wash them in brake and clutch cleaner.
Buy a gallon from your local motor factor

It cleans them very well with little effort if you soak it a bit

Just hazarding a guess as I've not tried it. But I would have thought a good soaking in Oven Cleaner would shift it. And it's cheap (if you don't get caught borrowing it )
