idling increases with temp

I have set my idling at around 800 rpm (383 stroker/edelbrock rpm performer combo). When the engine is started from cold it is fine. After a run the idle varies from 1000 to 1200 rpm. After an exhuberant drive last Thursday the exhasts startet to pop/on the overrun (i have'nt checked the header bolts for tightness but will do as i have had to nip them up once already) and on the run back home i got caught up in the usual M25 snail crawl. The car was kangaroo'ing at slow speeds up to about 40 if i tried to keep a constant speed but was happy if pressed on.

Now could these symptons be:
a) air/fuel ratio related
b) timing
c) ?????

As the car is off the road for diff change and dashboard upgrade isa there anything that may need a look/poke about whilst i have it in bits again (typical timing issue with the weather so good).

As always your advice/jibes/cracks and ridicule is much appreciated

Thanks guys in anticipation.

Andy, check your dizzy cap first. Mine was doing the same rapid idle, then it would not want to tick over properly/at all.
It was dirt and damp in the top of the dizzy and the advance mech was sticking. I washed it out with WD40 and it was fine.

Credit where it's due, Wilf told me to look there first.

Neil, I had a similar problem with my SR V8/ 351 Windsor, had to buy a new dizzy cap, it was water going in the scoop, and dropping into the dizzy, I have now blocked up the scoop. I had to buy a new cap as the contacts were coroded.
Popping I think will be loose headers, nip them up, but dont overtighten them, you may have to do this a few times before the gaskets stop compressing.
Regards Frank Dowsett. BLOKE.
