Rover V8 Oil Pressure

Guys,
Just got my engine running properly without water coming out of strange holes.
Oil pressure when first started was about 30 but as the engine warmed up it dropped to about 5 is this normal or do I have a problem?

Cheers
Adrian

All rovers run with low pressure,5lb on tick-over is on the low side of low but as long as its around 20 at 2000 and not noisy from the top end its probly OK.They say oil volume is more important than pressure. My new 4.6 has 40lb cold and 15lb hot at 850 revs.I used an old SD1 front cover with new oil pump gears and a new MGBV8 remote oil pump cover.

RE: Rover V8 Oil Pressure

Adrian,

It is possible to get a 'high-pressure' relief spring from Real Steel that will help the low pressure of your pump.

My 5.0L V8 Serpentine engine runs at 50psi at 2000 revs but still drops to around 15psi at idle when hot.

I shouldn't worry about it too much as Steve suggests.

RE: Rover V8 Oil Pressure

Adrian,

5 is a tad low but more important what's it like at 2/2.5 ? mine hovers around 45-55 when hot and again 15ish when at idle.

Cheers

Jim

RE: Rover V8 Oil Pressure

When I ran my 4.6 for the first time the other day, I was a tad worried at the oil pressure. I have the same set up as Steve and my oil pressure sender is located in the remote (Mocal) filter head, the pressure was about 40psi at approx 1500 rpm - I didn't run long enough for things to warm up. I assumed the pressure relief is set at about 40 psi.

Hi Kirk
how have you got the serpentine belt routed, I'm building a 4.8 with a serpentine front end and need to work out what to use as a tensioner / idle wheel on the near side.

RE: Rover V8 Oil Pressure

Kev,

The parts you need are standard Range Rover parts. There is a bracket mounted to the front of the nearside head that has a bearing and shaft fitted to it to which the pulley is bolted.

You need this set-up as the water pump on the serpentine engine runs in the reverse direction to the earlier 'standard' RV8 setup and the pump is driven off the back (flat) side of the belt.

I take it you have the correct alternator bracket and belt tensioner for the off-side of the engine?

It is a false economy not to fit the correct parts as the tensioners and pulleys are known to have siezed on some engines and taken out the drive belt.

I've attached a couple of images to show the setup on the front of the engine. They might be small as I had to shrink them to get them under 100kb.

Re: Rover V8 Oil Pressure

Started my engine yesterday and it took the good part of 20 seconds for the oil pressure to build up, then it went to 50 PSI. Shut the motor after that.
I am wondering if it could be related to the capillary gauge (old Smith from an MGB). Is it reliable or could it be be that the capillary was drained from oil ?
I'll give it another go tonight to see if pressure builds up instantly.
Chris

Re: Rover V8 Oil Pressure

I got my 3.5 fired for the first time last weekend and the oil light goes out ok so it has at least 5psi but the fancy telemtrix gauge is another matter I have screwed a T piece wher the standard sender would fit and the adaptor screws to this, all the parts supplied by Europa any one else had this problem I know engine has oil pressure but the gauge has me confused any ideas?

Re: Rover V8 Oil Pressure

To reply to my previous post, the motor starts with zero oil pressure.
It takes nearly 10 seconds for it to start rising around 5 psi, then it goes quickly to 50.
Tappets never make a strange sound, so oil is there all the time.
I will bleede the capillary to see if it improves gauge reading.
Oil pressure when warm is 20psi at tickover and 40 psi at 2400 rpm.
Nothing to worry about, then !
