oil temperature

Hello all i have been having a few problems with the car overheating and discovered that one of my fans had died and taken all the wiring with it, so after having a new fan, new thermostat, new wiring and a new temperature gauge i was so happy to take her for a propper run to dorset last weekend. I then noticed the oil temperature rising to just under 50 is ths right(especially while i was sitting in traffic?) im not very clued up on these things. My water temp is sitting at around 80, all the gauges are mechanical so vary from purr to purr.
thanks very much
tim

RE: oil temperature

Tim,

as long as you are using 'decent' oil it is good for 120 deg C continuous, 130 + intermitant. 50 C is VERY cool for oil and is not hot enough to boil off condensates etc. Are you sure the temp guage is reading correctly. As its mechanical you could remove the sender and place in a boiling kettle to check.

As usual I have to agree with Russ x( If both readings are as you quote I say you engine is running just fine with no fear of overheating. If you feel something is wrong do as Russ says and check both gauges in boiling water. If they read right blast away without fear. Its commonly said you dont need to fit an oil cooler unless the oil is getting above 80.So dont worry.I have said elsewhere my new engine is running between 80 and 90 water temp (even in a 3 mile traffic jam on monday) and the oil aint got above 60 without a cooler.

RE: oil temperature

Hi Steve
Do you run a normal 'stat or do you have one with holes drilled in it to improve flow. I assume that as you have a 4.6 block that you are using a weber/holley carby. My 4.0 block, (webber + DJE performance cam) still runs at 100 degrees with three 5mm holes drilled in the top of the 'stat & I'm concerned that this is just a little too high (still)

Cheers

Standard undrilled stat.Webber, performer manifold,RPI stage 3 heads,Piper 285 cam.But ally rad with twin 10" fans.Only goes to 95 before stat opens and shoots down to 80.Fans kept it to 85 in traffic jam for about 20 minutes with no sign of temp rising. :tu

RE: oil temperature

Hmm.
Thanks Steve. I think the basic differences with my set up are the lack of an ally rad. & a single fan.
Perhaps the easiest way forward is to change to twin fans first, & then wait for some hot weather! (Could be a while again then!)

Cheers
