Gearbox trouble

Had a bit of an oil leak from my gear box and now cannot seem to engage 4th gear, 2nd also seems difficult.

Seems to go into 1,3 and 5 smoothly and drives OK once there. If I try hard, I can pull the lever back hard enough and 4th will engage and it then drives OK whilst there.

Any ideas, or do I need a new box?

Cheers,
Tony B

RE: Gearbox trouble

You didn't mention if you replaced the oil that leaked?

RE: Gearbox trouble

Yes, I replaced the oil that leaked (with ATF) and also fixed the leak. Was leaking from the old speedo sensor location. Have replaced the leaking unit with one that doesn't leak.

If I understand my Haynes manual correctly, 4th gear is a straight drive from the main input shaft. What is odd is that when I forcibly push the car into 4th gear, it stayed there and the car drove fine. It was trying to engage the gear that seemed to be the problem. I'm wondering if the selector is faulty.

RE: Gearbox trouble

Before giving up on the box try adding Molyslip (for gearboxes) as an additive to your existing oil. Given long enough to take effect (can take a few hundred miles), this stuff can sort out numerous minor problems.
