Smoky V8

Rebuilt Rover 3.5, Efi (flapper type) ripped off and replaced with Web 500 carb. Ran in the cam ok, oil pressure ok etc. Trouble is, it seems to be running too rich. Exhaust is smoking (white smoke) and smells as though its running really rich ! The plugs also smell quite badly of petrol and are black.

I am told that the carb mixture screws should be wound all the way in and then out by 1 and 3/4 turns to get a rough starting point. Mine are wound out at least 3 turns (any more wound in and then it starts spluttering !). Timing seems to be ok (8 BDC with vac pipe off)

Where should I start ?

Thanks

Marcus

RE: Smoky V8

Have you got a gas analyser? (I may be able to help there) - it makes all this screw twiddling much easier

RE: Smoky V8

another thought - are you adjusting the idle, as I think you need to do this as you adjust the mixture to keep it at about 750 rpm, does sound well rich though!! Have you got the choke right off (open)?

Hi pal, yep, choke right off (still have to use it a tiny bit to start it). I was going to get an analyzer from ebay... best I get onto it !
