Supercharger Noise?

I have run my new supercharged set-up for the first time at the weekend (Vortech V1-T).
Whilst I was expecting some noise, I was not expecting the type of noise my charger is producing.
The noise is best described as a dry bearing squealing noise.
I have checked oil feed/drain/by-pass operation etc etc & all seems fine. It may be that as the V1-T has straight cut gears the noise I can hear is typical.
Noise seems to reduce with revs.
Can anyone offer any reassurance?
Thanks,
Baldric

RE: Supercharger Noise?

I suspect you are right as long as the oil feed is good, they do tend to be noisy.

Yes, the chatter is correct.

RE: Supercharger Noise?

Barry,

Could you post details as to where you purchased your charger along with some basic details such as to dimensions and the kit you've installed it into. I presume you've fitted to a Rover engine? did you need to replace any of the pulleys?

RE: Supercharger Noise?

Dan,
I have received several emails in relation to the supercharger "Kit"
installed.
It appears there no complete kits around for the RV8. There are a few conversions but they are fairly tame & aimed chiefly at the off-road market.
I have designed & had built a prototype unit for a Vortech centrifugal charger that mounts to the left bank cylinder head (from inside the car) & protrudes just past the standard crank pulley position. It is not simply bracketry, it encorporates a transfer drive shaft & belt/tensioner to reduce the size of installation, & puts the air intake where it should be (pointing to the front). It also provides increased opportunity for easily varying boost ratios.
I am making a few at the moment (just in case) since the demand for this unit appears to be good. This is somewhat premature as testing is not yet completed, although frankly, the unit is bullet proof.(It is likely to be endorsed by a major RV8 tuner in the near future).
Yes the unit is fitted to my 5.2ltr RV8 & (for low boost at least) the standard serpentine pully (6/7 rib)is being used.
What more can I say?

RE: Supercharger Noise?

:tu All sounds very interesting, Hope testing of your prototype unit goes to plan. I do have a few other questions...

How much extra height is added to the carb air filter?
You say it mount to the left bank. Is this on Top of the left bank or to it's side?
If you are planning on constructing a few more of these units then I would be very interested, My only concern is the viability of installing in the tight space of my Sumo.

RE: Supercharger Noise?

Dan,
Mine is fuel injected. Height need be no more than a usual air filter.
Mounting is in front of the left bank. Top of charger level with rocker cover, front of charger just past crank pulley & edge of charger in line with exhaust manifolds.
Send me pictures of relevent part of your bay & I will try to establish if the S/C assembly will fit.
I have 5 units being built at the moment.

RE: Supercharger Noise?

I've attached a top down photo of my engine bay.
From what I can work out from your description the unit would fit on the right hand side of the photo (As indicated in the photo below)

The Chassis rail on the Sumo is actually lower than the rocker cover
