Crnkshaft damper wobbling.

Hi all,

ive just noticed that my crankshaft pulley and damper wobble. It can only be seen at low engine speeds. Is this normal? I rebuilt it a few years ago, ive checked the reatining bolt and its tight.

RE: Crankshaft damper wobbling.

Hi Phil, not sure if you have the same problem as I did but, I had a slight noise coming from the front of the engine that I thought was the cam chain as I have fitted the double chain adjustable one that can in some instances catch the cover ( even though I checked that it would miss when rebuilding). It turned out to be the crankshaft pulley and harmonic damper, I checked to see if the retaining bolt was tight which it was. Then I noticed that there was a small amount of play in the unit. Not sure what had caused the problem but solved by welding 3 small lumps on the washer that goes behind the retaining bolt, making sure that they would not touch the crankshaft, but would contact the pulley. When I did it up tight, rattle gone, small oil leak gone and no problems since.

Hope this helps

RE: Crankshaft damper wobbling.

Cheers Martin,

actually took damper off yesterday and spun it up in the lathe. It was wabbling by 20thou. Rang rpi and they rekon thats OK. I wasnt happy with that so ive clouted it a few times to get it running true, its only held on with some rubber. Then spot welded it in place. HAve put it back onto car but now carnt seem to get the retaining bolt tight, the car keeps moving even if i chock the wheels up. Im going to have to get it over a pit and chock it up better.

Hi Phil, stupid question, but which gear have you put the car in? If you put it into 5th with the handbrake on tight, you should not move it at all.
