electrics

Afternoon chaps,
Having a few problems with some electrics, need to get this sorted it's the only thing stopping me starting the engine for the first time in it's new sumo home. Right, on the rover V8 with a Lucas DM8 distributor i have placed the ignition module away from the engine but there are three wires coming off the module, any idea where they go??? Do they go anywhere??? Question two, in the sumo build manual it states a wire (white/black) needs to be conected from the ignition coil to the distributor, is this from the plus or negative side of the coil and where on the dizzy is the wire conected? Or is that part of the above point?? Question three, am i right in thinking that the lucas DM8 does not have a ballast resistor and therefore does not need the white/green wire to the starter motor? If it does where/how????

RE: electrics

Thanks m eeley, took on board what you said, unfortunately i'm not using a rpi power amp so don't have the red, brown and black wires, so still unsure of what goes where. With the lack of replies i can only assume i've got everyone else but you stumped with the question!!!!!! If all else fails i'll try and start the damn thing as it is and check for sparks etc first.

Cheers

RE: electrics

Ballast resistor is on the coil not the dizzy and if you need one depends whether the coil is 12v or 6v, read the numbers on it to find out. The white black wire from the dizzy to the coil is probably the switch to make the spark happen and so will go on the negative side of the coil. On the dizzy it will go to the switch output, check the relevant Rover wiring manual to see where the wires go to on the dizzy ignition amp.

Tony

What ignition module are you using?

What wire colours are you trying to identify?

Let me know a few more details and I'll try to help further.

RE: electrics

Hi Mike

I had a similar setup with similar problems last November (see "No Spark for Rover" in Tech Tips Forum).

The following diagram was how mine was set up but I'm not sure the dizzy is quite the same.
http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/user_files/640.jpg

The 3 leads from the dizzy went to the ballast resisitor (a flat piece of metal with 3 space connectors on either side.

In the end I got hacked off and replaced the lot with a Mallory twin spark. If any of the bits catalogued are any use to you their yours to collect.

Good luck

karl

RE: electrics

thanks to you all for the advice, in the end i didn't need the three wires coming off the amp module, just needed to earth it properly then connect the positive side of the coil to a good positive and away i went.
started the engine for the first time, it feels great, i can get the body on now (probably more problems coming up soon then!!!)
