Spark at coil HT but not Plugs

Checked out my electrics tonight. I have a spark out of the coil HT lead, but no spark at the plugs.

Hopefully I am almost there and it is a simple case of rotor arm and cap.

I have the original SD1 electrics Lucas Opus and ballast resistor. Hopefully all the problems are usually getting the spark from the coil and the hardest part is solved.

RE: Spark at coil HT but not Plugs

Not necessarily. I assume your Lucas Opus is a 35DE8 (it should be inscribed on the body of the distributor. The following is an extract from RPI Engineering page: http://www.rpiv8.com/electrics-1.htm

"Lucas 'Opus system 35DE8, used 1976 through 82 With its amplifier and circuitry mounted internally this system has produced the most problems with complete failure of ignition sparks but problems normally lasts many months as the engine will normally re-start and behave again for some time. The failure is temperature related and can normally be identified by observing the rev counter because it will fail at the same instance due to loss of signal from the distributor".

They have reconditioned units if required.

I had the same problem and replaced mine with a Mallory Dual Spark (I'm told the Mallory electronic is better, but it's also more dosh and the dual spark is doing a fine job).

Good Luck

Karl

RE: Spark at coil HT but not Plugs

Karl,

Hmmm, doesn't sound good, but after ringing S&S preparations, (TR7 to TR8 converions), I feel a lot better, they are sending me their electronic replacement kit for the 35DE8, optical instead of magnetic, replaces all the 'guts'.

Sounds just like the luminition kit, but this only cost £65 , (plus Vodka and Tonic).

Well we will soon see..

Steve
