4.6 Problem

I have heard that there is a problem with earlier 4.6 blocks cracking. Please could someone point out where they crack and what it takes to fix one.

I know most people recommend buying a new unit from RPi and such like but a scrap engine with a cracked block must be a bargain this Yorkshireman can't resist. I have a friend with a specialist Aluminium shop. He has the tools and the skilled workforce to fix anything in Aluminium.

Just a thought.

RE: 4.6 Problem

Hi Vince,
I'm an ex Rover engine man.
There is a good reason why Rover started to cross bolt the bottom end of the block when they produced 4.2, 4.6l engines.
I would be very wary of any 4.6 that ain't cross bolted.
Russell Ram probably has more up to date info than I.
I thought you'd sold your car?
What are you up to?

RE: 4.6 Problem

I'm going to build a locost, including my own chassis. Now it will be going in for the SVA with a 2.0 pinto.... but I thought about putting a rover V8 in it later. But if you're going to do that, then why not the 4.6 instead of the 3.5.... if I could get one cheap enough.... then fix it up cheap enough... then why not.

RE: 4.6 Problem

Vince,

There was a 4.2 TVR engine on e-bay a couple of days ago with a cracked block, all complete for about £300 ish, might still be there?

Cheers

Jim

RE: 4.6 Problem

Hi Jim. Thanks for that. I've had a look and it is still there. They don't say where the crack is so I can only presume it needs a new block???

As a victim of this problem I say "dont go there".Unless you are prepared to reline the bores,Ie take it out to 5.0l with T top sleeves etc and a load of dosh.Buy a brand new block and spend as much or as little as you want on the rest.
I've just had mine on a rolling road and it showed over 300 bhp at 4700 rpm. I spent under £4000(but I did have the carb dizzy and headers already).
