intermittent overheating

hello all,
well i have just had my engine rebuilt and she is up and running all well and fine. BUT i seem to have an intermittent overheating problem. I have put a 72 thermostat in and she seems to be fine then i loose the water in the top hose randomly(when i squeeze it there is nothing in there), sometimes i can run for hours, then the next time 10 minutes down the road and she sky rockets. I have 2 12 inch fans one auto set at 80 degrees and the other is a manual from the cockpit. My header tank is currently below my filler neck and some people have surgested lifting it. I am left scratching my head in all this awesome weather. I am trying to get her on a rolling road to have her properly tuned but they don't want her until she is running at a constant temp fairly understandable really. She does have a slight flat spot at the moment and she has now done about 300 miles since the rebuild where i had a new cam and new timing gear put in. Does anyone have any ideas?
:} :} :}

Thanks very much

Tim

Definitly get your header tank to the highest point you can and run a bleed pipe from the top of the rad to the top of it.Only half fill so it acts as an expansion tank aswell.Mine is set up like this and even on the rolling road on tuesday this week the oil temp never went over 85C(capilary has gone my my water temp gauge so dont know what that was but assume not over 90c and no sign of boiling over.

Tim, as Steve says get your header tank as high as you can get it, sounds like you have an air lock as well (biggest cause of over-heating!) I have a expansion tank fitted to my header tank & it works a treat keeping the system full all the time Eric

RE: intermittent overheating

It seems to me that your biggest problem is to assign a female tag to your car.
In my limited experience 'they' can never make up their mind. Start refering to the car as HE and I'm sure that things will settle down, especially on Saturday afternoons once filled (with Guiness) and after the rugby (not Football as that's a girl's game).
