Wet Exhaust port ?

When removing the offside manifold I noticed one of the exhaust ports was ‘wet and oily’ , this is a recon engine so hopefully nothing too serious. All the other ports are dry and sooty.

The engine seems to run fine ticking over nicely and responds well when cracking the throttle., but I did notice the offside exhaust does smoke a bit more (white smoke).

RE: Wet Exhaust port ?

Run the engine with the plug disconnected, on the cylinder with the wet exhaust. If there is no difference in the engine performance you may have something as simple as a duff plug or lead.

RE: Wet Exhaust port ?

Found the problem with my oily plug, put a compression tester on all the cylinders only to find that the one in question has hardly any pressure reading at all.

Just not my day.. Still if I am lucky it is just a valve, but knowing my luck it is a broken ring..

Still at least both can be fixed with the engine in the chassis

SOLVED It...

I am a very happy man, after the disappointment of the compression test , I removed the rocker cover to start the strip down, and guess what, the rocker arm on no 4 exhaust had snapped in half, jamming the valve part open.

Nice easy fix..

RE: Wet Exhaust port ?

Tony,

Wll update the websit tonight, (been to depressed the last couple of weekends). Have now trimmed the boot lid and fitted the handle, (scary drilling my first holes in the body). Also made up a couple of guides to ensure the clutch cable doesn't rub anywhere or catch the exhaust manifold.

Trimmed the bottom of the sills, tub goes on and off a lot better now.

I am interested in knowing how you got on with the doors, were they a real pain to fit ?

Steve

RE: Wet Exhaust port ?

The drivers door wasn't too bad as there is a lot of movement in the body before it's fixed down in the engine bay. It's all down to trial and error, tighten down the bolts look, then add washers tighten down again look etc. when I'd got the doors correct i went to bolt the sills down and found the body sat about 13mm above the chassis. when i pulled the body down the doors became misaligned, so instead i hammered the chassis sills up to the body and then bolted it down. once that was done i then positioned the body flush with the door and fixed the body down in the engine bay and started on the passenger door. The passenger door was easier as i had an idea what i was doing but still took a while to get correct, the longer you spend the better the fit! There is quite a gap at the top edge where the door meets the dash on the passenger side though. I'll take some photo's tomorrow and either post them here or e-mail them too you and you can let me know you're thoughts.
