Breather

Hi,

can some one advise. I have attached the breather pipe from the rocker cover to the SU's but there is not a hole or inlet pipe on the other rocker cover. I have searched back through previous posts and it would seem that there is normally some form of inlet on one cover.

Will running it as I have set it up ( pic attached) create to much of a vacum in the crankcase

thanks
jeff

I've got mine set up like that: oil filler on one rocker cover and breather on the other. looks neat and works a treat.

Re: Breather

If there is no way air can get into the crankcase except by blowing past the piston rings you risk sucking oil out the sump, through the carb and burning it with the inlet charge. If is doesn't then you can thank a leaky rocker gasket or similar. Think about it, the object is to equalise crankcase pressure and air pressure not to suck your cheeks in until you are sick!

Re: Breather

Hi,
You must have an air inlet for the breathing system to work properly.
The rocker covers you are using should have an inlet pipe on the rear of the LHS one or if the engine is an early type it will have the inlet down near the bellhousing on the RHS.
These pipes should have a filter fitted to keep the dust out of your crankcase.
Hope this helps
Jim

Jeff
If the rocker covers are from an EFI RR I would expect to see the PCV at the rear of the NS cover.

Re: Breather

Mmmm It was a range rover injection as I removed the injection system to swap for a gear box. I guess some one may have changed them over before I layed my hands on the engine.

So lads what size hole do I need to drill

Re: Breather

Dont drill a hole. I Should have said that my pipe goes to a pankake air filter which gives the two way option you need . Can you route your pipe to an air filter?

Re: Breather

Hi ,
Take off the NS rocker cover and remove the splash plate from the inside (if fitted).
At the rear of the cover on the inside you'll see a thick circular boss. Drill a hole through here and push a piece of pipe in from the top. Somewhere in the region of 7mm diameter will be fine and the pipe should be a tight fit in the hole.
Replace the splash plate , cap the pipe with a miniature K + N filter and problem solved. Leave the "output" side of the breathing system as you have it, it's correct.
Regards
Jim
