East Anglia Region - Newsletter August 2005

Hi all,

Unfortunately, Steve and I were unable to get to July’s meet to the Suffolk coast. However, those that did go tell me that the weather was bright and sunny and the coast was ‘bracing’ as usual.

Also in July was the RAF Marham Families Day. Sadly, the weather was not so good. A number of cobras from our region had planned on attending. However, they were scuppered by the weather. This did not prevent Simon Finlay from representing us. By all accounts, the flying display was very good, and a healthy sum of money was raised for charity.

Looking forward to October, there has been a strong interest in the RAF Marham Track Day on 1st and 2nd. I have forwarded the details of all of you that have registered with me to the organisers. The consensus is that we’ll make use of the Sunday 2nd session. I may even take the Trans Am along!

A couple of Sundays ago, we went to the Helmingham Festival of Classics and Sportscars. I understand there were 450 classic cars in attendance. Steve even got to open the Dax up roaring down the main driveway in the concourse event. Although we were spread apart, there were quite a few cobras and familiar faces in attendance. The day was well organised and had the added benefit of giving me the opportunity to wander around the gardens while Steve eyed up the cars.

Last weekend, Steve had special permission J to take the Dax to Silverstone for the Le Mans Endurance Series 1000 km race. He even drove there and back with the roof off. Apparently, most of the race was driven with the safety car in control due to the wet conditions. That didn’t seem to deter Steve and his fellow drowned rats as he seems to have consumed a great deal of French lager and Guinness – just to keep warm and dry – as he told me! Anyway, as is usual in Le Mans races, the Audi won and a number of cars did not finish – apparently.

August Bank Holiday Monday is the Lavenham Rare Breeds Car Show and Carnival. I know a number have booked in as last year. This is always a popular show and I’m told by the organisers that the demand for entries increases every year. We will be there first thing; we’ll see you on the field.

As last month, here’s another reminder that, for September’s meet, Don Fleming has asked us to move the annual Treasure Hunt / Road Run / BBQ at his Norfolk Mead Hotel forward a week to Sunday September 11th. Please mark it in your diary now (if you didn’t do last month).

Also, here’s a reminder of the RAF Marham Track Days on October 1st and 2nd. The details were in last month's newsletter but for those that wish to participate and those assisting; please supply the following details –
  • Full name, address, date and place of birth of all participants and any others attending as "helpers".
  • Vehicle details - Make/Type, colour and registration number of participating vehicle(s), and of any support vehicles.
Without these details in advance, access will not be permitted on the day.

For those who have not already done so, please e-mail this information to me NOW.

For this month’s Sunday meet, I thought we could return to a pub that we last visited for our Christmas meal about 5 years ago and was previously used as a regional meet venue.
For Sunday 21st August at 12:00, we can visit the Four Horseshoes, Wickham Road, Thornham Magna, south of Eye just west of the A140.
This pub has a large car park, a good sized bar and dining area and has a good choice and beers and wines.
Following a drink and a chat, we may choose to have a cruise around the neighbouring countryside.

Here’s the list of East Anglian meets for 2005.
