TRANS-CYMRU CLASSIC EVENTS

TRANS-CYMRU CLASSIC EVENTS
Challenging Routes For Classic Vehicles
Tours Calendar 2002

Easter Tour 30 March
A 100 mile Tour starting near Monmouth. The Tour covers some of the finest countryside and many of the best "B" and unclassified roads in Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and the Brecon Beacons, all in early Spring splendour. A slap up lunch and final pit stop are included.

Grand Figure-of-8 Tour 20-21 April
A spectacular and challenging route, mainly on "B" and unclassified roads, through the Cambrian Mountains, the Brecon Beacons National Park, Herefordshire and Radnorshire. On Saturday we will cover about 150 miles through some of the remotest country in mid-Wales, visiting Llyn Brianne and travelling through steep-sided valleys and forests.

On Sunday we climb to over 1600 feet with superb mountain views followed by a visit to the Elan Valley with its spectacular reservoirs and dams. The Tour will be based at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells and will cover approximately 250 miles over the two days.

Lakes and Mountains Tour 19 May
Starting from Cyfarthfa Castle at the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons, this Tour passes through a fascinating variety of countryside including tranquil lowlands, high moors and forests. In 150 miles we will visit at least six scenic lakes and reservoirs and six mountain passes above 1300 feet in height to give wonderful views of some of Wales' highest mountains and most romantic castles. Most of the route will be on little-used unclassified roads with several challenging, steep climbs.

Wild West of Ireland Tour 2-9 June
A spectacular week-long tour of approximately 900 miles around the stunning scenery and roads of the "Wild" West of Ireland. The Automobile Association has included a drive here as being among the "Top Ten Scenic Drives of the World"!.

With over 30 years combined experience of touring the west of Ireland and our native knowledge of those remote country lanes you would never find on your own, we can promise you a route without equal. Some of the highlights of the Tour include:

§ Mizen Head
§ An exciting ascent of the Caha Mountains via an extraordinary series of rock tunnels
§ Moll's Gap with its Alpine-style scenery
§ The Dingle Peninsula including the Connor Pass renowned as a stage on many Irish Rallies
§ Cliffs of Moher - all 600 feet of them rearing out of the Atlantic Ocean
§ The Burren with its world-famous limestone plateaux
§ The wild and hauntingly beautiful coast of Connemara
§ The remote beaches and soaring sea cliffs - the highest sea cliffs in Europe - of Achill Island
§ Joyce Country with Ireland's Lake District
§ The Galtee and Knockmealdown Mountains

The Wild West of Ireland Tour is being sponsored by Swansea-Cork Ferries and we start the Tour with a welcome reception on board. All overnight accommodation and evening meals while in Ireland are included in the Tour package as are ferry crossings with en-suite cabins.

While we will be using out-of-the-way, remote, often challenging country roads for the most part, our aim is a gentle average of around 140-150 miles a day so allowing time to take in the wonderful scenery and visits if you wish to the gardens, castles and any of dozens of other attractions along the way.

Tour of Snowdonia 6-7 July
A Tour of the spectacular mountains, lakes and coast within and immediately around the Snowdonia National Park. In all we will cover around 280 miles over the two days. On the first day the Tour heads south to skirt the eastern edge of the National Park with varied scenery of forests, moorland, mountain and valleys. We turn west to reach our lunch halt, the super Dyfi View Restaurant near Machynlleth, and then explore the coast of Cardigan Bay.

Returning to our base for the Tour, the Waterloo Hotel in Betws-y-Coed, we pass beneath Cader Idris and the rugged Rhinog mountains. On Sunday we visit Snowdonia's highest mountains and explore the little-visited Llyn Peninsula before an end-of-Tour buffet back at the Waterloo.

Forest of Dean & Wye Valley 11 August
A 120 mile Tour through the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley plus some of the hidden corners along the Welsh border with Gloucester, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. As our special treat for this Tour we will be stopping for lunch at one of the most famous Country Inns in the Forest of Dean, the Wyndham Arms in the medieval village of Clearwell.
Trans-Cymru Classic 31 August - 1 September
Already established as Britain's most exciting weekend Classic Car Tour according to its participants, the Trans-Cymru Classic 2002 will again traverse Wales from south to north, mainly on "B" and unclassified roads. As usual, 300+ miles, plenty of steep climbs, little-used mountain roads, superb scenery and good food and accommodation. Note that this is our annual charity run.

The Welsh Challenge 1 - 4 November
A major new event making a circuit of Wales from Caerphilly to St. David's to Betws-y-Coed to Llangollen and back to Caerphilly giving a total of around 750 miles with the majority on "mean and challenging" roads. Participants can choose to take part in the Touring Event alone or can in addition take part in optional driving skill tests at off-road venues each day. The winner in the tests will receive the Welsh Challenge Trophy and there will also be Gold and Silver medal awards.

Christmas Tour 8 December
A route of approximately 90 miles along the Wales/England border. Gourmet mid-afternoon lunch plus special attraction visit included.

Some Comments From Previous Participants

"In over 10 years of entering Classic Runs and Rallies I have never enjoyed a Run so much. The Route was brilliant, the scenery breathtaking and the spirit amongst all who took part superb" - Participant from Cambridgeshire

"Arrived home late last Sunday night - a little tired and very wet but grinning from ear to ear - something which seems to have lasted all week!

Thanks again for a most enjoyable and well-organised event. We think that you have achieved a very special blend, combining fantastic routes, good organisation and food with a degree of camaraderie that is sadly lacking from many other places we go" - Participant from Monmouth

"We would like to go on record as participants in three exceptionally good runs with you in 2001. We were, you may recall, somewhat reticent about joining an organised Saturday evening "get together" on the two day runs. We have in fact thoroughly enjoyed these evenings (and twice been voted as being members of the noisiest table at dinner - it must mean something!)" - Participant from Devon

"A wonderful weekend, Scenery was fantastic. Can't wait to come again" - Participant from Chesterfield

My Son had a toy steering wheel which he used to spin furiously, making loads of go-faster noises, leaning into all the tight corners, perhaps running the government feels a bit like that. You make all the noises, but when you stop you haven't really gone anywhere.
