“Wiltshire Crop Circles and White Horses” followed by a “Dip

“Wiltshire Crop Circles and White Horses” followed by a “Dip and Dine”.

For anyone who would like a tour through some beautiful Wiltshire countryside, you are more than welcome to join us at the “Central Play House” car park in Salisbury on Sunday August 8th at 10:30hrs.

The tour will feature “Wiltshire Crop Circles and White Horses” but unfortunately the final route will be dependent on new circles this week and harvesting so I will not be able to finalise it until Saturday.

However this is basically what we plan to do. On leaving Salisbury we will take the A345 to Amesbury but will soon turn off and follow the minor road along the River Avon valley to the “Woodfords” and drive past Sting’s “Lake House”. At the end of this road turn right, over the river and into Amesbury.

At the traffic lights turn left and continue to follow the A345 north to Marlborough, on reaching Netheravon, turn right and take a minor road across the Downs to Everleigh. This road is very “Cobra Friendly” and would be a suitable place to stop, line up the cars and take a group photo!! Cross over the main road and drive down the minor road to Pewsey, (once again stunning views across Wiltshire) at the end of which are three corn circles in the field at the bottom of the hill, at the base of the Pewsey White Horse.

On reaching Pewsey around midday, there is a Q8 petrol station on the right hand side should anyone wish to refuel, during this time we will be waiting at the North Street car park a little further along on the left (for ten to fifteen minutes), to use the toilets and to meet up with any one in this area/Bristol/South Wales wishing to join for the second part of the drive.

On leaving the car park, we will turn left and take the next left to Wilcot/Alton Barnes.

There is another corn circle on the right hand side of the road, just prior to reaching Alton Barnes, where we will turn right up the hill, past the White Horse.

At the next left (approximately 3 miles) we will turn towards East Kennet and out to the main A4 road where another crop circle can be seen below West Kennet Long barrow.

On reaching the large roundabout at Beckhampton we will go straight across on the

A4 to Cherhill, with another White Horse on the left hand side.

On reaching Calne, we will turn left at the double mini roundabout onto the A3102 towards Melksham. Next main “T” junction we will turn left again, and in one mile turn right again, back onto the A3102.

Blackmore House is approximately 3.5 miles along this road, at the bottom of a steep hill, on left hand side just after Forest & Sandridge Primary School. If any of you wish to refuel at this point there is a Murco garage a mile on the left down the road.

Lunch will be as last year – a salad with all the trimmings followed by strawberries, meringues and cream!! And I am sure we can find a few bottles of Bacardi Breezers for the ladies!! Remember to bring your “cossies” for either a dip in the pool or Jacuzzi.

In the afternoon if anybody feels like a short drive, we will turn left out of the house drive and continue along the A3102. On reaching the middle of Melksham, turn right and drive down through the town, over the river bridge and down to the bypass, turning left towards Westbury. (A350) We will continue along the new bypass until we reach the minor road to Steeple Ashton at the top of Hag Hill and turn left.

This road will take us through the pretty village of Steeple Ashton and on towards the hills above Bratton and Westbury. We will turn off this road and drive towards Bratton and on reaching the “T” junction in Bratton, cross over and head up the hill marked “White Horse/Bratton Camp”. This road will take us up on to the top of the Westbury Hills with fabulous views across West Wiltshire and Somerset, if the weather is agreeable.

At the top of the hill we can park in the main car park, have an ice cream and walk across to the top of the hill.

After which we will turn left out of the car park and drive down into Westbury, viewing the White Horse on the right hand side on the way down.

I will then lead you through Westbury and out to the A350 towards Warminster.

As I said earlier, I will drive the final route on Saturday to see if I have to make any further minor changes and will hand out actual maps and full instructions on Sunday morning.

Anybody from the Wessex/Bristol groups or further afield, are more than welcome to join us, but I would appreciate it if you could let me know by email ("robpoulsom@hotmail.com") by Friday if you are planning to join us so that we know how many to cater for.

Many thanks.

Let’s hope for some good weather as we had the hottest day of the year last time we arranged a Cobra drive.

Look forward to seeing you all either in Salisbury or Pewsey.

Cheers.

Rob

Was looking forward to joining you now that you have returned from the wildness of South America but I am afraid, not this time.

Hope it goes well and that the weather holds.

See you sometime.

Rob, Sandra and I will hopefully be with you from the start at Salisbury I'll just have to get up early.
I hope the weather holds for us some wet stuff maybe coming in from the west later in the day. We may well be driving back into being further west than most of you folks. :thumb:
